Limelight Director to cycle 300 miles from Cork to Londonderry

18 June 2013

Limelight Director, Karen Sutton will be taking to the rolling hills of Ireland next week to cycle the 300 miles from Cork to Londonderry in 4 days. The challenge will be raising money for a water project in Peru, where millions of people are still living without clean, running water, often having to travel miles to the nearest river.

Karen, who has been a member of Shepperton Aurora Rotary Club for 5 years, said “This is the second international project I have taken part in; 3 years ago I travelled to New Delhi, vaccinating children against polio in the slums.

“I’ve only been riding a bike for 4 months. After 20 years of knee problems, I finally had surgery 9 months ago which has given me a completely new lease of life!”

The money raised, which has been approved for a Rotary Foundation ‘match grant’ with a total project value of over $27,000 will bring sustainable safe water to the village of La Obrilla in Piura region, north Peru with a population of 2,700 (450 families). The majority of the community obtain their income as labourers for local agriculture. The average household income is $75 USD per month. The community currently has an unused large water storage tower and pipe distribution network. The well, drilled to supply the tank, produced salty water and therefore the tower and distribution system were never used. This project, run by Water Missions International, will convert what is currently there into a safe water treatment system.
